The Vantaa City Museum in Tikkurila is now the Vantaa History Museum

The Vantaa City Museum records and studies the past of the Vantaa region and presents it in exhibitions, events and publications, among other things. The city museum also acts as Vantaa’s conservation authority. 

The museum has previously had only one location open to the public: the Vantaa City Museum, which is located in the old station building in Tikkurila. In June, another city museum location was opened, the Håkansböle Manor Museum. As a result, it became necessary to rename the museum in Tikkurila. 

“It was becoming unclear what the Vantaa City Museum referred to, whether it was the museum in Tikkurila or the museum organization as a whole,” says Museum Director Susanna Eskola.

An open survey was organized in spring 2025 to gather opinions on four different potential names for the museum in Tikkurila. The survey received 385 responses from people of different ages, living both in and outside of Vantaa. The responses strengthened the understanding that a new name was needed, as well as what the name should be like. Nearly 200 new suggestions for names were submitted. The name “Vantaa History Museum” was also found among these suggestions. The brand and communication agency Creative Day was involved in the final selection of the name.  

Changes to visual identity and operations as well

The Vantaa History Museum has also been given a new visual identity that is based on the brand of the City of Vantaa. The shape of the logo is inspired by the museum building’s famous facade, and the colors also evoke the red brick building and the light-colored decorations on its roof.

The Vantaa History Museum’s first exhibition is also historically the Vantaa City Museum’s first permanent exhibition. Until now, only temporary exhibitions of different durations have been organized in Tikkurila’s old station building. With the permanent exhibition, the museum will no longer need to be closed while the exhibitions are being changed.

“Shorter temporary exhibitions will only be arranged on the museum’s first floor. The second floor and its permanent exhibition as well as the Waiting Room event and workshop space on the first floor will be open all year round,” says Eskola.

The permanent history exhibition is part of Vantaa’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The Changing Vantaa exhibition will open to the public on November 27 at the Vantaa History Museum. More information:
